Foreign minister holds talks with Egyptian counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal held wide-ranging talks with his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Kamel Amr in Jeddah yesterday. The talks focused on ways and means “to bolster bilateral relations, key regional developments, and efforts to ensure normalcy, peace and security in the region as a whole,” said an Egyptian diplomat.
After holding talks with Prince Saud, the Egyptian foreign minister proceeded to Riyadh to attend the Friends of Yemen conference today, he added. Amr will deliver his country’s address before the conference, which aims to support and further enhance the development process in Yemen in all fields in the next phase.
Amr’s visit, which coincides with the historic presidential elections in Egypt beginning today, is the first by the Egyptian foreign minister after Riyadh recalled its ambassador and shut down its diplomatic missions in Egypt following unjustified protests. Thanks to the visionary statesmanship of Custodian of the Two Mosques King Abdullah that he ordered, only after a few days, to restore diplomatic ties with Egypt and open the missions.
A spokesman of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Amr Roshdi said the Egyptian foreign minister also discussed with Saudi officials the Syrian crisis in view of the latest developments and the implementation of Kofi Annan six-point plan.
The meeting between Prince Saud and his Egyptian counterpart in Jeddah was also attended by Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Qattan, and Egyptian Ambassador to the Kingdom Mahmoud Ouf besides a number of Saudi and Egyptian officials.
Cairo’s move to strengthen ties with the Gulf states and other rich nations will help to plug a state financing gap estimated at $9-12 billion, said a report published by Al-Ahram daily, while referring to the Yemen conference in Riyadh and the Egyptian participation. It is important to mention here that a number of representatives from the GCC member states as well as the European countries, the United States and the UN will attend the Yemen event.
Before leaving for Saudi Arabia yesterday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Amr denounced the recent terrorist explosion against a group of soldiers in Sanaa, offering his condolences to the Yemeni people, leadership and families of the victims. In a press release, he said that the explosion came after the great successes achieved by the Yemeni army in its endeavor to restore stability in Abin Province.
After his arrival in the Kingdom, the Egyptian foreign minister also appreciated the role of Egypt Embassy for making elaborate arrangements to facilitate voting by a large number of Egyptian expatriates in Riyadh and Jeddah.
