Saudi Arabia has assured all possible support to Iraq in its fight against terrorism and to restore peace in the war-torn country.
The assurance came during the wide-ranging talks between Iraqi President Fuad Masum and several high-ranking Saudi officials including Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, and Deputy Crown Prince Muqrin.
President Masum, who also had consultations with Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal and Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, chief of General Intelligence was “assured all assistance” in line with the needs expressed by the Iraqi authorities, said a diplomatic source. The Saudi officials also reaffirmed their support for the new Iraqi government, he added.
The main focus of the visit however, was “normalizing political and diplomatic relations between the two countries,” Iraqi Finance Minister Hoshyar Zebari, who is part of the Iraqi delegation, said. The two sides also discussed “cooperation in the field of fighting terrorism and economic, trade and security relations,” Zebari added, showing keen interest to boost bilateral relations further.
He sought urgent support from all stakeholders keeping in view the volatile situation in Iraq.
Masum said he “is pleased to visit Saudi Arabia and meet with his brother King Abdullah.”
Masum left for Makkah to perform Umrah on Wednesday. He is accompanied by Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, Finance Minister Hoshyar Zebari and other dignitaries.
