The academic and cultural achievements of the International Indian School, Riyadh (IISR), were highlighted recently at the institution’s annual day.
The event took place in the presence of Indian Ambassador Hamid Ali Rao, who was the chief guest.
The cultural evening was the highlight of the annual day. It was preceded by the distribution of trophies and certificates of commendation for students who performed exceptionally well in academic and co-curricular activities during the previous academic year.
The choir and the orchestra entertained the large audience of Saudi and Indian officials and parents at the IISR Boys Section auditorium. The evening ended with songs and dances performed by dozens of students.
Outstanding achievers were honored by Rao, IISR Chairman Aslam Meer Mohiddin; IISR Principal Dr. Shaukat Perwez; the special guest Mussaid Al-Mohsin Al-Mujahid, supervisor at the Ministry of Education; and Ashok Warrier, first secretary at the Indian embassy.
A number of officials, leaders of the community and heads of community organizations were present. All members of the IISR managing committee namely Aqeel Shaikh, Mohd Firoz Rahman, Nusrat Ahmad, Bilal Habib and Mani Shanava, who were also present, played a pivotal role in organizing the annual day program.
The evening began with a round of applause as Perwez told the distinguished guests about the various milestones of the school.
Speaking on the occasion, Rao stressed the need to educate students. Rao exhorted the students to work hard and bring honor to their school and parents. He said that learning must be their foremost priority. He wanted to see all IISR students “excelling in their studies, in sports and in cultural activities.”
He said they have better facilities than students in India.
Mohiddin, in his address, thanked the principal and the staff of the school. He also highlighted the efforts of the managing committee in helping to solve the problems faced by the school. He noted the role played by the IISR managing committee in locating and hiring a new building for the girls’ section.
In the welcome address, Perwez stressed the need for the younger generation to develop the ability to discriminate “right from wrong.”
The annual report was presented by Asma Shah, vice principal of IISR Girls Section. Proficiency Awards were given to the meritorious students of standard 10, 11 and 12.
Merit certificates for top performers in various subjects were also awarded on the occasion. Air India, the national carrier of India, honored the top ranking students of class 10 by giving them air tickets. A number of achievers in sports were awarded trophies.
The members of administrative and academic staff, who completed 25 years, 20 years and 10 years of service were honored.
Abin Paulose, Ashish Salguna, Emani Shireen and Sara Mariam Jacob were honored as the best students. The formal vote of thanks was proposed by Meera Rehman, vice principal for IISR Boys Section.
The entertaining variety program was staged by students of all ages.
The English-medium IISR is one of the largest Indian schools with close to 8,000 students. It was established in 1982. The IISR runs separate sections for boys and girls. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, India and is licensed by the Ministry of Education, Saudi Arabia.
