Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Naeem Khan has been elected the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) from among 18 member states of the Asian Group.
The election was held in Jeddah on Monday during the meeting of the OIC Permanent Representatives in which Pakistan received 10 member votes, Afghanistan five votes, Indonesia, two and Malaysia, one vote.
Candidates from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Malaysia contested from the Asian Group for the position of assistant secretary general.
A statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office said: “Pakistan attaches high importance to the OIC. Ambassador Naeem Khan will continue with our efforts to project and promote the common interests of the world’s Muslims through the OIC.”
Pakistan has been Coordinating the OIC Working Group on Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs in UN Geneva also. In this position, it has been negotiating several important resolutions on Human Rights Council’s agenda on behalf of OIC Group.
The OIC, established in 1969, is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations and has 57 member states spread over four continents. The body also has a permanent delegation to the UN.
The organization is the collective voice of the Muslim world and works to safeguard and protect the interests of Muslims in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.
