RIYADH: A high-profile meeting to be attended by GCC foreign ministers, US Secretary of State John Kerry and British Minister for Middle East and Africa Tobias Ellwood in Jeddah on Thursday will focus on efforts to restore peace and stability in Yemen.
Kerry will arrive in Jeddah on Wednesday after wrapping us his visits to Kenya and Nigeria.
“Secretary Kerry will hold a series of meetings with senior Saudi leaders and his counterparts from the GCC, the UK and UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on Wednesday and Thursday,” said Lincoln Frager, said a spokesman of the US Embassy, here Monday.
He said: “Kerry’s discussion will focus on the ongoing conflict in Yemen and efforts to restore peace and security.”
Nicola Woodget, spokeswoman of the British Embassy, said: “This will be Ellwood’s second trip to Saudi Arabia and he will also have a meeting with Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir.”
The meeting is likely to gain strength from Russian remarks supporting the legitimacy of the Yemeni president.
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Sunday that the government of his country supports the legitimacy of Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and rejects the coup carried out by the Houthi rebel movement that led to the exile of Hadi.
During his visit to the Kingdom on Sunday, Bogdanov said that the Russian position is in harmony with that of Yemen regarding the support provided to the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, in order to achieve peace in that Arab country.
