A Saudi delegation led by Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal will participate in the high-profile ministerial meeting to be held by the Arab League in Cairo on Sunday, Osama Nugali, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said here on Saturday. The meeting is crucial keeping in view of the fast-changing developments in the Arab world.
“The Palestinian cause, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the repercussions of Israeli aggression on Gaza and the civil wars in Syria, Libya and Iraq will top the agenda of the ministerial meeting,” said an Arab diplomat. He said that the meeting will also address several issues, including new developments in Sudan and Somalia.
This meeting of the Arab League comes days before a UN General Assembly session. A meeting held by the Middle East Quartet and a ministerial meeting held by the GCC will possibly be convened on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, while the UN meeting will also provide an effective platform for Arab officials to discuss regional developments.
A report said that ways to combat terrorism and the progress made by the Arab-African cooperation will be on the agenda, besides the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has already arrived in Cairo.
Abbas will meet his Egyptian counterpart and attend the Arab League foreign ministers meeting during his three-day visit to that country. Palestinian Ambassador to Egypt Jamal Shobaki, who also serves as an envoy to the Arab League, said Friday that the foreign ministers would dedicate a special session to Palestine.
A delegation from the Arab League will also visit Gaza on Wednesday following the ministerial meeting. The delegation will review damages caused to the infrastructure and utilities in Gaza. The delegation will be accompanied by an aid convoy consisting of more then a dozen truckloads of medicine and supplies.
