Energy security will top the agenda of talks between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Crown Prince Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, and high-ranking Saudi officials in Jeddah today.
“Abe, accompanied by a delegation of 120 top Japanese officials and businessmen, is due to arrive in Jeddah later today,” said an official of the Japanese Embassy.
“The talks will focus on a range of issues,” he said. “The visit will possibly coincide with the signing of an agreement to facilitate Japanese investment in the Kingdom to help secure energy resources at lower costs,” said a report published in The Japan Times yesterday.
“Under the accord, Saudi Arabia will give Japan a most-favored-nation status, benefiting Japanese companies operating in the country,” said the report, which was not independently verified by Saudi officials yesterday.
In response, Tokyo will allow Saudi firms to operate more smoothly in Japan, the report added.
The source said that the occasion of Abe’s visit will be used by Japanese businessmen to promote “Japanese exports of infrastructure, including medical and railway systems.”
“The Japanese deputy minister of agriculture and top officials and businessmen included in the entourage will look at opportunities for partnerships,” he added.
